Millions of cars are manufactured each year, as are millions of various other motor vehicles. There are many types of cars designed for different purposes. The United States once the biggest car-producing country in the world, now makes about 11 million cars annually. In the past most Americans cars were big and powerful but the oil shortages of the 1970s and foreign competition forced American car makers to start building smaller cars in the early 1980s Japan, now the industry leade, produced more than 13 million cars in 1989. Countries such as Britain, South Korea, Italy, Germany, France and Sweden are also major suppliers of cars and other motor vehicles
